Into the Spider-Verse followed this origin story fairly closely, while also unspooling a fantastic original plot involving a scheme by Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, to open a portal to another dimension so that he might bring his wife and child back from the dead. Miles initially resists the calling to become a hero, but when Peter Parker is killed in battle, the youth slowly comes to terms with the fact that with great power. Miles is a 13-year old student who suffers an accident very similar to the one that befell Peter Parker, gaining powers that are nearly identical to (but in some ways, even more formidable than) the original Spidey's. It also featured the big-screen debut of a character that audiences had been waiting to see in theaters for a long time: Miles Morales, who was first introduced in 2011 in the pages of Marvel Comics' Ultimate line.

2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was many things: a brilliantly innovative piece of animation, one of the best Spider-Man stories ever put to film, and one heck of a good time at the movies, to name a few.
